EMG and NCS testing are the tools we use to find out exactly where the problem is coming from, so treatment can be targeted instead of guesswork.<\/p>\n<h3>What Is a Nerve Conduction Study (NCS)?<\/h3>\n<p>The only way to truly evaluate how a nerve is functioning is to test it electrically. During an NCS, small electrodes placed on the skin send a mild electrical pulse along the nerve, and we measure how fast and how strong the signal travels. Slower or weaker responses can point to nerve compression, damage, or a condition like neuropathy. The sensation is brief and mild, most patients describe it as a quick tap or tingle rather than significant pain, though it can feel a little odd or tedious over the course of the test.<\/p>\n<h2>What Is an Electromyography (EMG)?<\/h2>\n<p>Where NCS looks at how a signal travels along a nerve, EMG looks at how the muscle itself responds. Using a very small needle, similar to an acupuncturist\u2019s needle, we directly evaluate the electrical activity of specific muscles, both at rest and during light contraction. This gives us an indirect look at the nerve that supplies that muscle. Together, EMG and NCS give a complete picture: is the issue in the nerve, the muscle, or both?<\/p>\n<h3>Why These Tests Matter<\/h3>\n<p>Getting an accurate diagnosis before starting treatment means we\u2019re not guessing. Whether the next step is an injection, physical therapy, a regenerative option like RPA, or a more advanced procedure, knowing exactly where the problem originates helps Dr. Nivens build a plan that\u2019s targeted to your specific issue, not a one-size-fits-all approach.<\/p>\n<h3>What to Expect<\/h3>\n<p>Most EMG\/NCS appointments take 30 to 60 minutes, depending on how many nerves and muscles need to be tested.
