Electromyography and Nerve Conduction Studies
Numbness, tingling, weakness, or pain that radiates down an arm or leg can come from a lot of different places, a pinched nerve in the spine, a nerve problem further down the limb, or the muscle itself. EMG and NCS testing are the tools we use to find out exactly where the problem is coming from, so treatment can be targeted instead of guesswork.
What Is a Nerve Conduction Study (NCS)?
The only way to truly evaluate how a nerve is functioning is to test it electrically. During an NCS, small electrodes placed on the skin send a mild electrical pulse along the nerve, and we measure how fast and how strong the signal travels. Slower or weaker responses can point to nerve compression, damage, or a condition like neuropathy. The sensation is brief and mild, most patients describe it as a quick tap or tingle rather than significant pain, though it can feel a little odd or tedious over the course of the test.
What Is an Electromyography (EMG)?
Where NCS looks at how a signal travels along a nerve, EMG looks at how the muscle itself responds. Using a very small needle, similar to an acupuncturist’s needle, we directly evaluate the electrical activity of specific muscles, both at rest and during light contraction. This gives us an indirect look at the nerve that supplies that muscle. Together, EMG and NCS give a complete picture: is the issue in the nerve, the muscle, or both?

What to Expect
Most EMG/NCS appointments take 30 to 60 minutes, depending on how many nerves and muscles need to be tested. There’s no sedation and no downtime, you can drive yourself home and return to normal activity right away. Some patients notice mild soreness at the needle sites for a day or so afterward. Dr. Nivens will review the results with you and talk through what they mean for your treatment plan.
