Advanced Wound Care

Healing the Unhealable Through a Whole-Body Approach

When a cut, ulcer, or surgical incision refuses to close after several weeks, it is no longer just a surface-level issue. A non-healing wound is a blaring physiological alarm that something within your body’s internal circuit has broken down.

At Pitter Patter Podiatry & Integrative Health, we understand that you cannot heal a complex wound by simply changing the bandage. Quadruple board-certified physician Dr. JennaLou Hollnagel-Kauffman approaches wound care as a complex puzzle.

By evaluating your underlying circulation, nerve health, and systemic inflammation, we deploy aggressive, state-of-the-art limb salvage protocols to prevent severe infection, close stubborn wounds, and get you back on your feet.

Elite Medical Direction: The KOL Advantage

Wound care is a highly complex medical discipline that requires specialized expertise. You are not just seeing a general practitioner; you are being treated by a nationally recognized authority in the field of advanced tissue repair.

Over the past decade, Dr. JennaLou has successfully launched and directed two advanced wound care centers. Her uncompromising clinical protocols have earned her prestigious national recognition for elite limb salvage outcomes, including the Center of Distinction and the President’s Award.

Today, she travels the country as a Key Opinion Leader (KOL) to educate her medical peers on advanced healing techniques. She brings this elite, hospital-grade expertise directly to her patients, operating seamlessly across our private Franklin clinic and our Smyrna hospital outpatient facility alongside our board certified Nurse Practitioner.

Why Wounds Stall: The Vascular Root System

Drawing on her academic foundation in Botany, Dr. JennaLou understands that a plant cannot repair a damaged stem if its root system is deprived of water. The human body functions precisely the same way. A wound cannot close if its vascular “roots” are starved of oxygen, blood flow, and vital nutrients.

Normal tissue repair follows a precise cascade: bleeding, inflammation, tissue proliferation, and remodeling. However, systemic health conditions can trap a wound in the initial “inflammatory phase.” We utilize advanced diagnostics to identify and correct the underlying roadblocks to your healing, which frequently include:

Poor Circulation (Peripheral Artery Disease)

Blocking the delivery of oxygen-rich blood.

Venous Insufficiency

Causing fluid to pool in the lower legs and break down the fragile skin.

Diabetes & High Blood Sugar

Stiffening the arteries and severely impairing the local immune response.

Peripheral Neuropathy

Eliminating the protective sensation of pain, allowing minor sores to deepen unnoticed.

Systemic Inflammation & Poor Nutrition

Depriving the body of the exact cellular building blocks needed to synthesize new tissue.

Conditions We Manage

Our certified medical team provides critical, head-to-toe care for hard-to-heal deficits. We utilize advanced protocols to manage and close:

  • Diabetic Foot Ulcers (DFUs): Dangerous open sores that typically form on the bottom of the foot due to neuropathy and repetitive physical pressure.
  • Venous Leg Ulcers: Shallow, highly inflammatory wounds that develop on the lower legs due to malfunctioning blood valves and fluid pooling.
  • Arterial Ulcers: Painful, “punched out” looking wounds caused by severely restricted arterial blood flow.
  • Pressure Injuries (Bedsores): Deep tissue damage caused by prolonged, unrelieved physical pressure on the skin.
  • Post-Mohs & Surgical Wounds: Complex surgical incisions or cancer-removal sites that have stalled or split open (dehiscence).
  • Chronic Lymphedema: Severe, chronic swelling caused by a compromised lymphatic system that eventually leads to weeping skin and tissue breakdown.

The Restorative Wound Care Toolkit

Once we identify why your wound is stalled, we utilize an aggressive toolkit of advanced interventions to restart the healing cascade. We do not rely on standard gauze; we utilize the most advanced tissue technologies available in modern medicine.

Advanced Tissue Scaffolding & Skin Grafting

When a wound is too deep to close on its own, we provide the body with a structural blueprint. We utilize state-of-the-art allografts and xenografts (specialized tissue matrices) to protect the exposed wound bed. These pristine, cell-free scaffolds provide a physical framework that encourages your own resident cells to migrate across the wound and rapidly synthesize new, healthy skin.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Oxygen is the primary fuel for tissue repair. For wounds compromised by poor circulation, we utilize Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, also known as HBOT. By breathing 100 percent pure oxygen inside a pressurized chamber, causing your blood plasma to become super-saturated. This oxygen-dense blood bypasses vascular blockages to reach the starved wound tissue, rapidly accelerating cellular repair and fighting off deep-bone infections.

Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (Wound Vacs)

For deep, heavily draining wounds, we apply specialized vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) devices. This system applies gentle, continuous negative pressure to the wound bed, which continuously pulls away infectious fluid, reduces swelling, and physically draws the edges of the wound together.

  • Targeted peptide therapy

Diabetic Limb Salvage

Defending Against Amputation

For a patient living with diabetes, a foot ulcer is a medical emergency. Due to neuropathy, a patient may walk on an open wound for weeks without feeling it, driving dangerous bacteria directly into the bone. Dr. JennaLou is fiercely dedicated to aggressive diabetic limb salvage. By combining rapid infection control, mechanical offloading (specialized boots and casts to remove physical pressure), and advanced tissue grafts, our ultimate goal is to save the limb, preserve your mobility, and restore your independence.

Dual-Location Accessibility

Elite Care Where You Need It

Complex wound care often requires specialized medical environments. To ensure our patients receive the exact level of care their condition demands, Dr. JennaLou oversees treatments at two distinct locations. We offer comprehensive diagnostic evaluations, 3C Patch applications, and advanced grafting in the comfort of our private Franklin, TN clinic. For patients requiring aggressive interventions like HBOT or hospital-grade outpatient resources, we coordinate your seamless care at our Smyrna, TN hospital facility.

Frequently Asked Questions | Wound Care

The general medical consensus is that if a wound has not shown significant signs of healing within 30 days, it is classified as “chronic” and requires a specialist. However, if you are diabetic, elderly, have heart disease, swelling in legs, immunocompromised, or have peripheral neuropathy, you should not wait. Any cut, blister, or puncture on the foot should be evaluated by our clinic immediately to prevent a rapid infection.

Debridement is the medical process of meticulously removing dead (necrotic) tissue from the wound bed. Dead tissue is a magnet for bacterial infection and physically blocks new, healthy skin cells from growing. By safely clearing away this debris, we expose the healthy, bleeding tissue underneath, which “wakes up” the wound and restarts your body’s natural healing cascade.

Absolutely. Rebuilding human tissue requires a massive amount of metabolic energy. If your diet is deficient in protein, Vitamin C, Zinc, or essential amino acids, your body literally lacks the raw materials required to synthesize new skin and collagen. As part of our integrative approach, we frequently run specialized lab panels to ensure your systemic nutrition is supporting your wound recovery.

Not always. While Dr. JennaLou is a Board-Certified Surgeon capable of performing complex surgical skin grafts in an operating room, many of our advanced tissue scaffolds right here in our outpatient clinic. These advanced matrices are placed over the wound during a standard appointment, requiring no general anesthesia.

Do Not Wait for a Wound to Worsen.

Time is the most critical factor in successful wound healing and limb salvage. Schedule an immediate diagnostic evaluation to restart your healing process today.
