About The Practice

Hawaii Island Stem Cell Therapy and Regenerative Medicine is a regenerative medicine practice on the Big Island of Hawaii, founded and led by Dr. Christopher Lawinski, MD, a board-certified integrative and holistic physician.

We offer ultrasound-guided orthobiologic injection for joint, tendon, ligament, and nerve-related concerns, and we have been doing this work on the island since 2015. Our primary clinic is in Pahoa, at the Vitality Integrative Medicine Clinic, and we see patients at satellite clinics in downtown Kailua-Kona and on Maui.

Is This Worth a Conversation?

It may be, if any of these sound familiar:

A joint, tendon, or ligament has not recovered, and rest and rehabilitation have run their course

Surgery is not indicated, or has already been tried without lasting relief

The pain has outlasted the injury that caused it

You have been told there is nothing further to do

When the Standard Options Run Out

The sequence is familiar to anyone who has lived it.

A joint, tendon, or ligament does not recover — from an injury, or from the slow structural wear that accumulates over decades. The first response is symptom control, usually a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, paired with conventional rehabilitation. When that does not resolve the problem, the conversation turns toward surgery. And when surgery is not indicated, or has already been tried without lasting relief, patients are frequently told the same thing: there is nothing further to do, learn to live with it, here is something for the pain.

Musculoskeletal pain has become common enough in modern life that most people quietly accept it as an inevitable consequence of getting older.

The reason is mechanical rather than mysterious.

Blood delivers the cells and nutrients that rebuild damaged tissue, and cartilage, ligament, and tendon receive comparatively little of it. Repair in those structures is slow, and it can stop before it finishes. Those same structures carry a dense nerve supply, which is why an unfinished repair so often leaves pain behind after the original injury has settled. And because everything in the musculoskeletal system is held in tension against everything else, a weak link in one place quietly loads the structures around it — which is how a bad ankle becomes a bad hip two years later.

Seen that way, a stalled recovery is not a failure of will or a verdict about your age. It is an unfinished repair in tissue that was never well supplied to begin with.

Regenerative medicine supporting the body's natural healing response

Working With Your Own Healing Response

Regenerative medicine starts from a different premise than symptom management.

Rather than suppressing a signal or overriding a process, we place biologically active material into the tissue where repair has stalled, with the intent of restarting it. Platelets are the clearest illustration: they are your body’s own repair signal, the particles that gather at an injury and tell the surrounding tissue to rebuild. Concentrating them and placing them precisely amounts to amplifying a message your body is already trying to send.

The material can come from your own blood, from your own marrow or fat in the form of mesenchymal stem cells, or from prepared donor sources. Which one suits you is a real conversation, not a formality.

Precision Is Not a Detail. It Is the Procedure.

Material is only half of the equation. Where it goes is the other half.

For the past six years, every injection here has been placed under ultrasound guidance. Dr. Lawinski watches the placement happen on screen, in real time, rather than judging position by feel and surface landmarks. The targets are not always large — a hip or a knee at one end of the range, a tendon sheath at the other.

It matters for a plain reason. Material that lands beside the structure instead of inside it does nothing at all, and you do not get a second attempt at a placement nobody could see.

Care That Does Not Require a Plane Ticket

People on the Big Island are used to a particular calculation: whether the care you need is worth a flight to Oahu, or to the mainland, with the cost and the disruption that follows.

This practice exists so that calculation is not necessary for regenerative care.

Dr. Lawinski earned his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and completed his Family Medicine residency at the University of Hawaii, and has practiced in Pahoa since 2010. He is board certified by the American Board of Integrative and Holistic Medicine and serves as medical director for a network of Big Island healthcare organizations. He performs the regenerative procedures offered here personally.

Procedures are minimally invasive, and most patients drive themselves home afterward.

In Patients’ Own Words

I’ve been seeing Dr. Chris Lawinski since 2022 for treatment of a herniated disc and for ketamine therapy, and I cannot recommend his practice highly enough. From the beginning, Dr. Lawinski has brought an exceptional combination of warmth, care, and deep expertise in holistic and alternative healing modalities. His thoughtful, compassionate presence is matched by his commitment to offering truly cutting-edge and hard-to-access therapies—like stem cell treatment—in a safe and supportive environment.

Dr. Lawinski’s dedication to genuine healing, and his knowledge of alternative health approaches, is rare and deeply appreciated. I am so grateful to have found his care.

I recently experienced nerve pain in my lower back because of bad posture related to my arthritis. Dr. Lawinski suggest a new salt water treatment from France that uses a special salt water to eliminate the nerve pain. I was pretty skeptical but he said he had a 100% success rate so far, it was affordable, and because of my prior experience with Dr. Chris he has earned my trust. I am so glad I did it worked for me just like it was suppose to, and very noticeably within hours. The nerve pain was reduced almost to nothing from a very painful starting point. I have to say I was happily surprised at how well it worked again, without any drugs at all.

I like very much that Dr. Lawinski is both an MD and a Naturopath. He has made a huge difference and improvement to my quality of life. Successful pain reduction without the use of anti inflammatory drugs, narcotics, or over the counter pills of any kind is medicine I support. I am a medical marijuana patient, I use cannabis in moderation because it relaxes me and I find it the most effective if I do have slight aches and pains…..

Mahalo Dr. Chris, your awesome….

My health has improved overall. The pain is subsiding. Very grateful

Dr. Lawinski has provided Stem cell treatments and Pro Lo therapy to me for advanced arthritis in both knees, tendon and ligament issue in my knees and shoulders, and total loss of cartilage in my knees. He provided these services for much less than I was quoted by other providers. That was the only way I could ever afford to do it. Both treatments were very helpful in their own way. My knees had been swollen and painful for many years prior to the stem cell treatment. I had pain in the connecting tissues also. While we were not able to regenerate noticeable cartilage in my knees, the swelling and pain were reduced to almost nothing and the tendons and ligaments finally healed after years of bothering me. So while I did not gain much range of motion in my knees, the swelling and the vast majority of the pain has been gone for years. I am grateful to Dr. Lawinski for improving my quality of life at about 30% of what I was quoted elsewhere. The stem cells worked quickly within days I saw improvement but also showed continued improvement over time. Good stuff in my case after many years of suffering to the point of not being able to sleep my knees hurt so bad.

Dr. Lawinski has provided cutting edge stem cell and pro lo therapy that really helped me without a lot of prescription drugs.

At 75 years old I thought nothing short of major surgery would really improve the appearance of my skin. I was pleasantly surprised that PRP therapy to my neck and upper chest reduced the sun damage and wrinkles- by about 25 years!  I got the therapy about 2 years ago and it is STILL visibly better in that area than it was before the procedure. I think the neck and upper chest area is critical to how you look and is also very difficult to improve with creams, topicals and other procedures.  This procedure was fast, easy and recovery time was almost zero. I recommend this to anyone who wants a fresher, healthier look without surgery.

I have enjoyed the benefits of PRP therapy for both face and scalp. The sessions are pleasant compared to other procedures and the benefits steadily unfold over time. The nice people and the natural approach to improving my whole health in combination with the procedure gives this clinic a definite edge. I can really see how the natural supplements make me both feel and look better, too.
